I've been talking about this for years, how technology will eventually seriously complicate the vegetarian/non-vegetarian divide once meat can be grown without hurting animals.

Most of the time when I bring this up, carnivorous folks I'm talking with recoil with nasty looks on their faces at the prospect of eating meat from clean lab vats; this reaction doesn't seem to jibe well with the reality of the meat they are eating now, which even if it comes from an animal that lived a happy, free-range life (doubtful) it still went through some nasty $#|t as it was forced off this mortal coil. Not true with in vitro meat!

So, progress has been made, and we are all zooming along towards a slaughterhouse-free mcnugget.

Mmm-Mmm. They were derisively nicknamed "doodlebugs" by those that were targeted; apparently the Brits had a habit of giving pejorative nicknames to scary things so as to take the edge of the terror.

The name referenced the strange sound V1s made: they had a primitive jet engine(!) that made a very distinct sound in flight, which was so loud it could be heard up to 10 miles away.

When the internal guidance system (!) sensed that the thing had flown far enough (measured by revolutions in the tiny nose-mounded anemometer thingy) it pitched the missile into a power dive. The force of the dive cut off fuel to the engine, and 15 seconds later the device and its very large payload hit the ground in a shallow dive (rather than dropping straight in like a conventional bomb) spreading death and destruction up to 1,800 feet away from the impact zone.

So people on the ground in England could totally hear these things flying over, and grew to know they had 15 seconds to hide once the weird sounds stopped.

That's pretty $#(*$ing terrifying.

Here's what they sounded like--> sound plays when after the page loads. Recording is very loud/distorted, so be careful. The sample actually has a flyover sound, and the engine cutting out, and the explosion. Amazing.

Lots of info there too.

The Wikki entry is fantastic too--> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/V-1_flying_bomb

Shooting Marbles at 16,000 mph

This is how I want my tax dollars spent, along with bike paths.

http://science.nasa.gov/headlines/y2007/14mar_marbles.htm?list27315

You sir: kindly be a proper gentleman, and take your feet off the sofa.

Kindly.

Personally I do enjoy thoroughly using the word, but only in the context of replacing the prevailing "very much" when giving thanks. (Reuters) -- Deep inside the Arctic Circle work is about to begin on a giant frozen Noah's Ark for food crops to provide a last bastion in the battle against global warming.

And within a year the first seeds of what will eventually be home for samples of all 1.5 million distinct varieties of agricultural crops worldwide will be tucked safely inside the vaults deep in a mountain on the archipelago of Svalbard.

There, at the end of a tunnel 120 meters into the side of a mountain, 80 meters above estimated sea levels even if all polar ice melts, and 18 degrees Celsius below freezing, they will stay like a bank security deposit.

"It will be the best freezer in the world by several orders of magnitude. The seeds will be safe there for decades," said Cary Fowler of the Food and Agricultural Organization's Global Crop Diversity Trust.

"Svalbard is a safety backup -- and we hope we never have to use it."

The Norwegian government is footing the $5 million construction bill and the Global Crop Diversity Trust is providing the estimated $125,000 a year running costs.

"We are going back to the older varieties because that is where you find the largest genetic diversity ... and diversity is protection," Fowler told Reuters in London.

Svalbard will not find and sort the seeds. That is being left to the various seed banks around the world in the front line of the battle to protect biodiversity.

The function of the Arctic Noah's Ark will be to hold samples of all the food crop varieties in case disaster strikes any of the banks -- like the typhoon that wiped out the Philippines agri crop gene bank in October.

It will also ensure a pristine source of research material for the world's botanists struggling to create crop varieties that will be able to withstand the massive changes in rainfall patterns and temperature that may come with global warming.

The scientists from around the world predict that global average temperatures will rise by between 1.8 and 4.0 degrees Celsius this century due to human activities, putting millions at risk from rising sea levels, floods, famines and storms.

"Current crops are adapted to the current climate. Start changing that and you change everything," Fowler said. "Plant breeders will have to be designing totally new varieties."

"We already have a water crisis with agriculture and climate change will make it worse. It is not a simply matter of migrating crops northwards. Everything changes -- sunlight, temperature, insects, diseases, pollinators," he added.

He said the Svalbard seed collection would not include modern hybrid varieties because by and large they had genetic diversity bred out of them.

But it would also not rule out genetically modified organisms on the simple grounds that it would be virtually impossible to screen them out and in any case they would never amount to more than a tiny fraction of the total.

The vaults on the remote archipelago 1,500 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle should have been dug and lined with meter-thick concrete by October ready for systems installation and a formal opening early in 2008.

Within two years they should be holding the vast majority of the world's food crop varieties in splendid, frozen and permanent isolation.

Copyright 2007 Reuters. (wtf)

Okay, so now it seems that Benzo is going to finally import the SMART to the USA in 2008, roughly a million years after they started selling them in Europe, and several years after they began selling them to our kinder, gentler neighbors to the north.

If you've been following this obsessively like me (doubtful) then you know that 3 years ago or so, Benzo was thinking that the USA would only start buying SMART if they sold a weak-ass SUV here, call the Four-Four. What an stupid f*$(#ing idea that was...the only people that are going to buy these things hate on SUVs with a serious passion. Geez.

Well, they appear to have pulled their collective head out of their germanic buttocks and realized that they should sell the original, tiny, fabulous four-two model here.

So, after gloming on some extra safety(?) and emissions equipment, they're hurtling towards importing them to the USA as of...2008. Hold your breath.

Oh, the tiny things don't have an estimated $$ here yet, but they are $12,000 in Europe, and $15,000 in Canada, so they'll probably be waaay too expensive in the USA.

Better late than never!!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://fellswoop13.blogspot.com/2006/06/smart-cars-in-usa-by-2008ah-finally.html' title='SMART cars in USA by 2008.....ah, finally? Plain and simple. Can't say I'm not suprised, but wow, no posts for well over a month. Lame-o.

Now, back to my obsession: The Complete Annihilation Of SUVs Forever.

This gas crunch, which I have been yearning for for years now, is really starting to hit SUV sales bigtime. It worked a bit last year, but the fact that we're into our 2nd season of painful pump prices is sticking it to SUV drivers in the sensitive-bits. Airships Gonna Make A Comeback!

I love airships. I'm sorry I missed their heyday. Every time I look at the Empire State Building, it fills me with retro-futuristic glee to think that they originally intended the top of it to be a place to land dirigibles.

Well, the whole hindenburg thing put the kibosh on the slow-boat-in-the-air thang, but it looks like with super modern tech, they are a-comin' back. Granted, they are pie in the sky at the moment, but if this plan works out, we'll all be able to cruise at the speed of a redlined lamborghini and swim in a pool as we look out at the mountains below.

Here is the text of a recent CNN.com article:

The flying luxury hotel of tomorrow

Cruise ship will sail through the air, not the water

This is not a Blimp. It's a sort of flying Queen Mary 2 that could change the way you think about air travel. It's the Aeroscraft, and when it's completed, it will ferry pampered passengers across continents and oceans as they stroll leisurely about the one-acre cabin or relax in their well-appointed staterooms.

Unlike its dirigible ancestors, the Aeroscraft is not lighter than air. Its 14 million cubic feet of helium hoist only two thirds of the craft's weight.

The rigid and surprisingly aerodynamic body -- driven by huge rearward propellers -- generates enough additional lift to keep the behemoth and its 400-ton payload aloft while cruising.

During takeoff and landing, six turbofan jet engines push the ship up or ease its descent.

This two-football-fields-long concept airship is the brainchild of Igor Pasternak, whose privately-funded California firm, Worldwide Aeros Corporation, is in the early stages of developing a prototype and expects to have one completed by 2010.

Pasternak says several cruise ship companies have expressed interest in the project, and for good reason: The craft would have a range of several thousand miles and, with an estimated top speed of 174 miles per hour, could traverse the continental U.S. in about 18 hours.

During the flight, passengers would peer at national landmarks just 8,000 feet below or, if they weren't captivated by the view, the cavernous interior would easily accommodate such amenities as luxury staterooms, restaurants, even a casino.

To minimize noise, the aft-mounted propellers will be electric, powered by a renewable source such as hydrogen fuel cells. A sophisticated buoyancy-management system will serve the same purpose as trim on an airplane, allowing for precise adjustments in flight dynamics to compensate for outside conditions and passenger movement.

The automated system will draw outside air into compartments throughout the ship and compress it to manage onboard weight.

The company envisions a cargo-carrying version that could deliver a store's worth of merchandise from a centralized distribution center straight to a Wal-Mart parking lot or, because the helium-filled craft will float, a year's worth of supplies to an offshore oil rig.

"You can land on the snow, you can land on the water," Pasternak says. Oooh! More good(ish) news on impending doom for SUVs..

This is from CNN.com/money:

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - In 1981, the last time gas prices breached $3, adjusted for inflation, the average car got 21 miles to the gallon.

Jump ahead 24 years, a period when there have been huge advances in automotive fuel-efficiency, and the average passenger vehicle on the road gets...21 miles to the gallon.

In fact, however, vehicles have gotten considerably more fuel-efficient, according to a recent EPA report. It's just that car buyers have wanted other things from that efficiency rather than simply to travel farther on a gallon of gas.

For the same 21 miles per gallon, America drivers today are buying bigger, faster vehicles with a lot more power. Light trucks, a category that includes SUVs and minivans, now account for 50 percent of passenger vehicles sold in the U.S. That's more than double their share in 1981.

Could $3 gas change all that? There already are several signs that it is.

* Large SUV sales are 11.2 percent lower than they were at this time last year, according to AutoData.
* In the "beige book" released Wednesday, the Federal Reserve reported a shift to vehicles that use less gas.
* General Motors has indicated that it is extending its "Employee Price" incentives to
* These days, more consumers are saying that they are looking at gas mileage in making vehicle choices. In a recent poll by Kelley Blue Book and Harris Interactive, 59 percent of current vehicle shoppers said gas prices have either changed their minds or strongly influenced
* Meanwhile, according to Kelley Blue Book, resale values of used large SUVs are dropping.

(the image in this post is from a coworker that went to Amsterdam recently and shared this photo with moi as she heard I was into the small car thang. The Republicans in the Senate are united behind him, and the Democrats don't have the votes to defeat his nomination or even maintain a filibuster of it. The round trip distance was a bit under 600 miles, including a stupid navigational error on my part. I don't know if I'll ever stop getting 95, 93, and 128 mixed up. Lets just say I got to see lovely manchester NH before I found 101 east that let me cut get back to the coast (porstmouth) and be on my way north again. I think I missed a toll thanks to my 50 mile detour.

The rest of the ride up was pretty sweet. The ride back down was going excellently until I got into southern maine, where the beaches are. Then it was literally jammed up all the way from there back into massachusetts, with only a few brief respites along the way. Every toll plaza was backed up for miles, and it was backed up for most of the exits....oh it sucked mightily. I was in traffic for easily an extra 1.5 hours.

No speeding tickets...excellent. Lets just say that at no point in the entire trip was I passed by anyone or anthing. And the VFR got 45mpg on the highway at those speeds. At one point I got 216 miles out of 1 tank!

I'm looking to be at the 5000 mile mark on the VFR at my 1 year anniversary with it, and while I do look forward to the day that it is paid off, I am delighted to say I'm more enamored with the bike 1 year in than when I got it.

In other news, impending chronological milestones have caused loved ones to purchase me a bit of moto gear I've been jonesing for but just haven't had the discretionary loot to make happen: a pair of aerostitch's "triple digit raincovers" to aid in the hardcore gear department. In 2004, Hurricane Ivan tore through underwater oil pipelines in the Gulf, cutting output from oil refineries and driving gasoline prices above $2 a gallon. Yet consumers continued to buy gas-guzzlers, responding to Detroit’s incentive programs...while SUV owners may have been willing to pay $50 to fill a 20-gallon gas tank when a gallon cost $2.50, at $3 a gallon a fill-up costs a SUV owner $60, and as the cost edges closer to $100 it will start to make smaller cars look more attractive.

“With every major shift in gas prices over the last year we have not seen a major shift in consumer buying practices, but there’s definitely a breaking point where people will consider smaller vehicles, and $60 for a tank of gas is where we think people will sit up and take notice,"

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/9142893/

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://fellswoop13.blogspot.com/2005/09/oh-my-goodness-hallelujah.html' title='oh. my. goodness. There are all sorts of nasty truths on display. Makes one think that when a larger grade terrorist attack happens in the US the federal government is not really able to respond....at least not for a while. For a while, you are on your own and it's some Hobbes-ish man v. man action. Hairless apes.

The resulting spike in gas prices is sparking quite a bit of discussion about conservation, consumption, and the whole cars/suv debate.

The giant, longterm crush americans have had on sport utility vehicles embodies a tremendous amount of what I can't f__king stand. I think that something that takes up that much visual and physical space, endanders other vehicles due to it's size and shape, and generally consumes resources in a wildly excessive fashion (from the energy required to fabricate their enormous bulk to the gas they consume and emissions they spew.)

I understand that in certain situations a four wheel drive truck is the right tool for the job. Think of how many people drove suburbans, pickups and vans back in the 1980s. I bet most of those horse-trailering, boat towing, snow plowing etc. folks will continue to need giant vehicles, and they'll just have to deal with how much it costs to run them (although I would assume they would all become turbodiesels)

For the teeming masses that bought SUVs because they wanted a giant intimidating vehicle, or to not have to shovel snow a few times a year, or because everyone else is doing it....it seems judgement day is near. I am experiencing pretty giagantic schadenfreude as I ride by gas stations and watch the numbers rise. It makes me giddy, really. I would love to hear people bitching about gas prices nowadays as they fill up the tank of their escalade. I want to hear them thinking abot selling it. Ooooh yeah. G.M. and Weight Watchers would very much like for you to not own a shovel, and just use your SUV to blast your way out the driveway.

Get Your War On

The best political cartoon out there.

salman rushdie on religion/islam/church&state

"I remember a big opinion poll taken by The New York Times in which people were asked whether they would accept as a presidential candidate a woman, a Jew, an African American, a homosexual, and an atheist. JB kept saying it felt like having a gigantic hairdryer pointed at you, but I feel that really did the incredibly high humidity an injustice. No hairdryer is that humid. It was about this small city in Norway called Stavanger that let a British artist named Antony Gormley install his heavy human-shaped iron sculptures all over the place, from public squares to inside of people's houses. Not too suprsingly, Norweigian folks take a bit more kindly to modern art and its challenges than a comparible amur'cun town would. And their blissfully pinko gubmint also appears to fund public art quite handsomely as well. MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/4086/1370/400/vfr-and-owl.jpg" border="0" /> A photo that combines an old obsession with a new one.

Okay, I am obsessed with many things. Since I was a wee lad, I've had a thing for speed.... I remember on family car trips annoying my father by asking him why other cars on the highway were travelling faster than ours...especially if it was the same kind of car. I didn't understand why if we could go that fast we weren't.

Later I was ever-so-uniquely obsessed with sports-cars. In 8th grade I more or less worshipped the Lamborghini Countach. Not unlike discovering that santa claus isn't real, adding to my adolescent lugubriousness was the realization that I'll never be able to afford or insure an exotic car and get from 0-60 in four seconds like the lambo.

The summer I graduated from high school (1991) life finally presented the obvious solution to my dilemma...motorcycles. I've been riding motorized two wheeled vehicles ever since. Last fall I decided to follow through on this quest and purchase my dream vehicle, a Honda VFR-800a "Interceptor".

Enough back story. This photo incorporates that tried-and-true obsession with a new one, owls. I have always dug muppets and various large-eyed animals. Why it took me this long to realize that this particuar creature is more or less a comically-perfect manifestation of all I am programmed to think is cute...a little nugget of distilled excellence provided by the harsh realities of evolution....was just waiting for me to expend useless mental energy upon is all spilt milk.

There is an essay contest on the VFR-specific website that I frequent, and recently this guy in california was on a ride out in the boonies when he saw this creature precariously hanging out on the double-yellow line of a two lane road. The guy immediately pulled over and scooped up the creature (a tiny owl) and brought it to the side of the road. For some fabulous reason the owl was completely tame, so the guy got to take a picture of it sitting in his hand, and then actually pose the owl perching on the throttle of his motorcycle. The owl was then picked up and brought to the edge of the woods, where it flew up into a tree, checked the guy out a bit more, and then flew away.

Needless to say, I was deeply moved by this tale, and the photos of the owl slapped me into the realization that I should have been obsessed with these little creatures for a long time now. Better late than never though.

The photo was taken by a guy who calls himself "alleycatdad" and here is a link to the thread on www.vfrdiscussion.com --> http://www.vfrdiscussion.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=13418
